Dental Procedures & Home Care

The Procedure

At Oak Park Veterinary Clinic we view proper dental care as an essential element of your pet’s Annual Wellness Cycle®. That is why Dr. Strickland examines your pet’s dental health during

every annual examination. During this exam she is looking for signs of periodontal disease and its severity.  It is estimated that over 85% of all dogs and cats suffer from some degree of periodontal disease by the age of three.  If this infection is left untreated it can result in bad breath, severe tooth/gum pain, tooth loss, and abscesses that can release bacteria into the blood stream which may lead to major organ failure.

When Dr. Strickland sees signs of significant dental disease she will recommend having your pet undergo dental procedures that include ultrasonic scaling of the teeth and under the gum line to remove calculus and plaque, high speed polishing, and tooth extractions if warranted.

We require pre-op blood work in order to determine if your pet is healthy enough to receive general anesthesia and undergo these procedures. We have outlined the steps of a typical

dental procedure in the photos below.
