Prior to purchasing or rescuing any pet you should develop a pet care budget for your household. Just like with children there are built-in annual costs with owning a pet that are unavoidable in order to maintain their health, wellness, and quality of life. The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that the average annual cost of keeping your dog current on vaccinations with a well animal visit will exceed $200.00. Your cat will run in excess of $100.00. You can expect to pay anywhere between $100.00 and $300.00 annually for premium (non-prescription) food for your dog while your cat will cost somewhere between $100 and $200 for premium food. If you plan on grooming your pet you can expect to pay $40.00-$50.00 per visit for complete grooming with hair cutting, nail
trim, bath, anal gland expression, and ear cleaning.
There are no financial shortcuts to your pet’s Annual Wellness Cycle®. Failure to allow your pet to receive all elements of our annual cycle will more than likely result in greater expenses down the road in sick pet medical examinations and treatments as it ages. Pet ownership is one of those “you can pay me now, or pay me later” type of things in life. We would strongly discourage you from pet ownership if you are not in a financial position to meet your pet’s minimum annual wellness requirements. There are a variety of pet insurance and Care Credit options in the marketplace today that can help ease your financial burden. Feel free to ask us for information or a credit application when you visit the clinic.
With all of that said Oak Park Veterinary Clinic strives daily to provide superior wellness care at a reasonable cost to our clients. We are not the cheapest vaccination clinic in the Kansas City area nor are we the most expensive. If you have a question about costs prior to an Annual Wellness Cycle® visit please feel free to call us for a current estimate based
specifically on your pet’s needs. If you are price shopping for services please make sure you are comparing services apples-to-apples and not apples-to-mangos.
Should your pet require a surgical procedure Dr. Strickland will be happy to provide you with a detailed, itemized, procedure estimate. This estimate will include all pre-anesthetic blood work, pre-anesthetic medications, surgical procedure, surgical monitoring, post-anesthetic
medications, go-home pain medications and related recovery equipment, and post-surgical monitoring by one of our highly qualified veterinary technicians until your pet is returned to your care. Occasionally, during surgery Dr. Strickland will come across something that was not included in your original estimate but needs to be resolved. If this occurs one of our staff will contact you and make you aware of the adjustment and its estimated cost. This is all designed to make sure you have no surprises when you come to pick up your pet.
